Who inspires you?
This question might beg for a famous, renown person – but I’m more inspired by someone who plays a big role in my life: my sister, Kathleen. She does more by 8 a.m. than most do in a full day. She’s a BOSS and just blows me away. The way she manages her work family, her large family (mom of 4 grown kids and Mimi to 7 grandkids) and her lifelong friends. She’s a nurturer and would give her shirt off her back. She powers through obstacles and perseveres.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter PR?
Listen closely to the ‘soft’ news from many sources. Look at the story telling. See what is interesting. Many times, once you are in the PR realm, you start to understand that if a company or prominent figure is mentioned – a PR person was the one who connected the journalist to the entity. Understanding from early on that you have the opportunity to be that person is invigorating. Be hungry to learn and move fast on your feet. PR is exhilarating – and finding the passion early will solidify that this is the industry for you.
What show are you currently binge-watching?
My family just finished all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad. We were very late to the party, but we like that we finish – never to be ‘left hanging.’ It was fascinating. Being a chemist can be used for good & evil!
If you could choose any mentor, who would it be and why?
Oh, I’ll be cheesy and say one of the Food Network or HGTV Stars. I’ll tell you why – they’ve gone through a vetting process to make it onto TV, and they have learned how to juggle their life with public/work life. I’m confident they have business and life savvy/prowess to impart. A mix of book smarts and street smarts – you can tell those like Chip & Joanna Gaines or the Pioneer Woman have learned how to be moguls and present in their family life. Getting their feedback and tips would be amazing.
What’s your favorite life hack?
Acknowledging things that don’t work necessarily anymore for you. In my case – after years of being a ‘purse’ person – I’m less weighed down and able to zip around with just a small cross body bag. Many times, I have my key and phone in pockets and I’m set!
How do you define success?
Striking a healthy balance in all you do. Achieving your goals, but smelling the roses and being present with family and friends while feeling a sense of accomplishment.
