[Newsletter] 12.11.25 | “He’s not pervy,”

December 10, 2025

This month, we’re thankful for the gift of gaffes. Celebrities, politicians, authors and businesses alike were cooking up communication fails—and a few wins. Lessons learned from racist rants, book recommendations (or lack thereof), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and many more. Plus, some articles of interest to check out while you’re on holiday break. Thank you for sending in your submissions, and remember to keep them coming!

“He’s not pervy,” said actress Jennifer Lawrence, describing “Die My Love” costar Robert Pattinson. In an interview on the “Las Culturistas” podcast, Lawrence explained, with typical candor, the lack of need for an intimacy coordinator on set for their new psychological thriller. “A lot of male actors get offended if you don’t want to….and then the punishment starts,” she said. “But he was not like that, for the record.” What was once a relatively unremarkable behind-the-scenes fact now fills minds with follow-up questions. What other male actor is she talking about? Who is pervy? When audiences go to the theater, is that the word you want them thinking about?

THE RUNNERS-UP

“Campbell’s does not use 3D-printed chicken,” stated the 150-year-old soup company, defending their reputation against one of their very own executives. In a recording exposed by an employee’s lawsuit, the former vice president of IT, Martin Bally, can be heard calling Indian co-workers “idiots” and claiming that he doesn’t buy Campbell’s products as they are “unhealthy” and “highly processed food[s]” for “poor people.” Talk about some negative words. The company’s rebuttal was solid. “We’re proud of the food we make and the high-quality ingredients we use. Campbell’s soups are made with real chicken. Period,” their website states. We’d recommend stopping at the period. Instead, they continued to deny the false claims. In fact, they gave us a couple of other chicken alternatives to be afraid of, too! “We do not use 3D-printed chicken, lab-grown chicken, or any form of artificial or bioengineered meat in our soups.” This soup company just got a lesson in hot water.

But are the products effective? There certainly can be “some benefit” to peptide therapy for skin care, said Dr. Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at George Washington University. “They’re not a scam.” But they also shouldn’t be your only skin care solution, he added.

“I don’t get invited to parties, I don’t have any friends,” admitted Congresswoman Nancy Mace in response to a question about whether Washington, D.C. is indeed ruled by a group of elites that help cover up each other’s crimes. Five minutes into an otherwise successful and well-communicated interview, Rep. Mace, who is running for governor of South Carolina in 2026, created a soundbite SNL only dreams of. Needless to say, the internet had a field day. Nancy Mace was, of course, not invited.

WRONG THING TO SAY

Chappell Roan was chosen to induct the legendary Cyndi Lauper into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year and, while the content of her speech was thoughtful, her delivery was greatly hampered. Roan squinted and struggled to read the words from the teleprompter before she dropped the f-bomb, covered her mouth and then said, “I messed up so bad by refusing to get contacts. Holy cow.” Be sure to watch the video for the cringe-worthy performance. The lesson, besides making sure your prescription is up to date, is to always rehearse.

“What did the president mean when he called the reporter piggy,” was the question posed to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt by a reporter following the viral video of President Trump saying “quiet piggy” to a reporter during a briefing on Air Force One. Leavitt responded, “The president is very frank and honest…” and then tripled down on the “frankness and honest” messaging that she delivered in a very brash tone. Apparently, name calling is just a biproduct of the “unprecedented access,” the White House gives reporters these days.

“I did a jean ad,” shrugged actress Sydney Sweeney in an interview with GQ magazine. Her response followed the question of whether she was surprised by the reaction on social media to her American Eagle advertisement. When accused of promoting eugenics and white supremacist rhetoric, we would recommend—at the very least—including an acknowledgement. Replying with a seemingly unrelated answer and without any acknowledgement of the question comes across as a blow-off. Adding a simple “yes” could have a different impact. At the beginning of the interview, it was actually noted that the ad benefited a crisis-prevention hotline, yet there has been little discussion about her philanthropic work in the aftermath of the video’s publication.

EXPECTED FALLOUT

“I can’t even recommend it anymore,” author Colleen Hoover said about her best-selling book “It Ends with Us” after an extensive legal battle between the costars of its film adaptation, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. “I feel like [the lawsuit] has overshadowed it. I’m almost embarrassed to say I wrote it. When people ask what I do, I’m just like, ‘I’m a writer. Please don’t ask me what I wrote.’” The blame has shifted back and forth between the stars, but now it seems the director is getting in on the action. In fact, Hoover announced her next book, which will be published in January, that tells the story of an author who faces viral backlash over the movie adaptation of their book…

UNEXPECTED FRIENDLINESS

In an interesting turn of events, the mayor-elect of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and President Trump met in the Oval Office to discuss issues facing New Yorkers and build a working relationship. With a lot to unpack from their interview, one thing stood out. Mamdani had his headlines in his back pocket—something we highly recommend to all our clients. When asked by a reporter why Mamdani flew to D.C. instead of opting for the eco-friendlier option of taking the train, he had a response on transportation ready to go. “I will use every form of transit, and I want to make sure they’re all affordable in New York City, and that’s why making buses fast and free is a central piece of our campaign,” he said. The only thing that could have made it better was an acknowledgement. Trump’s defense didn’t hurt either.

ARTICLES OF INTEREST

For our readers interested in American history, this article and the docuseries are worth checking out. While the following quote isn’t perfect, Burns did a wonderful job communicating the complexity of the subject matter and the philosophy behind him and his co-creator’s approach when he said, “Our job is to be emotional archaeologists. We’re not excavating the dry dates and facts. There’s no quiz. But there are feelings, and there are human lives involved, and that’s what we want to communicate.”

“You Don’t Say” is a reminder not to repeat and deny a negative word because of how the listener hears words. When you repeat and deny a negative word, the listener is likely to overlook the denial and hear the opposite of what the speaker is trying to say.
